Superstar tennis player Serena Williams got a lot of heat for her comments about the Steubenville, Ohio rape case, in which two high school football players were recently sentenced. The Grand Slam title winner made a controversial assessment of the situation, saying the victim "shouldn't have put herself in that position." The comments were made in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, whose reporter saw the case sentencing on the television and asked Serena, "Do you think it was fair, what they got?"

Serena responded by saying, "I'm not blaming the girl, but if you're a 16-year-old and you're drunk like that, your parents should teach you — don't take drinks from other people."

The 31-year-old was also quoted as saying, "She's 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn't remember? It could have been much worse. She's lucky. Obviously I don't know, maybe she wasn't a virgin, but she shouldn't have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that's different."

Williams' comments set of a firestorm on social media sites, with commenters blasting her perceived insensitivity to the situation.
