The hearts of many long-time Yankees fans probably broke a little bit once they received the news that the Yankees shortstop and Captain, Derek Jeter, has officially announced that the 2014 season will be his last playing professional baseball. Jeter made the announcement today, Wednesday, February 12th, in a lengthy open letter he wrote or his fans via Facebook.
The 2014 season will mark Jeter's 20th in Major League Baseball, and according to his own words, it seems only fitting that this be his last.
"I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball. For the last 20 years I've been completely focused on two goals: playing my best and helping the Yankees win. It's now time for something new."
One key point that Jeter made was that he plans on doing everything in his power to help the Yankees obtain one more championship before he makes his permanent exit, and embark on new chapters of his life.
"There are many things I want to do in business and in philanthropic work, in addition to focusing more on my personal life and starting a family of my own. But before that, I want to soak in every moment of every day this year, so I can remember it for the rest of my life. And most importantly, I want to help the Yankees reach our goal of winning another championship."
Throughout the course of his career, Jeter has managed to win five World Series titles, and gain a total of 3,316 hits since he first stepped up to bat. Many fans have jumped on Twitter to voice their support and appreciation for all that Jeter has contributed to the Yankees over the years. Many are sad that he will be departing, but will have many great memories to reflect back on as the years go by.
