After enduring endless backlash for portraying herself as a Black woman, Rachel Dolezal scheduled a press conference for today (June 9) that she later cancelled. Now Dolezal has just announced via Facebook that she has resigned from her position as the President of the Washington Chapter of the NAACP.
In a lengthy statement Rachel went on to disclose the reasoning which led to her decision to step down. The Civil Rights went on to explain that "the dialogue has unexpectedly shifted internationally to my personal identity in the context of defining race and ethnicity."
She then wrote "I am consistently committed to empowering marginalized voices and believe that many individuals have been heard in the last hours and days that would not otherwise have had a platform to weigh in on this important discussion. Additionally, I have always deferred to the state and national NAACP leadership and offer my sincere gratitude for their unwavering support of my leadership through this unexpected firestorm. She later "passed the baton" to Naima Quarles-Burnley, who was formerly the Vice President.
Given the level of public scrutiny she's been under for days, do you believe Rachel will continue advocating for human rights? Leave a comment with your thoughts below.
