The largest inmate release in U.S. history is expected to take place next month when 6,000 inmates will be set free, with another 8,550 being released over the next year. The Washington Post revealed that the Sentencing Commission voted to lower sentences for non-violent drug offenders and also amend federal drug sentencing guidelines.
The new "Drug Minus Two" policy will likely let half of the 100,000 drug offenders in federal prison be let go early, and will reduce the sentences of eligiable inmates by two years on average. The expected timeline for release is Oct. 30 through Nov. 2, according to Fox News.
Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates explained the situation further, "Even with the Sentencing Commission's reductions, drug offenders will have served substantial prison sentences. Moreover, these reductions are not automatic. Under the Commission's directive, Federal judges are required to carefully consider public safety in deciding whether to reduce an inmate's sentence."
