The Robins Air Force Base in Georgia is under fire this week after advertising their "Fun Shoot" with Martin Luther King Jr. on the flyer. Described as a "trap, skeet and sporting clay shooting event" scheduled on MLK Day (January 18), the 78th Force Support Squadron's have been posting the ad since their announcement on December 28. They've since apologized for their "insensitivity and failure to provide appropriate oversight of our marketing process" and for any offense or harm they may have caused via email Thursday (1/15). "There was no malice of forethought in the flyer's creation and it was never the base's intention to portray Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a negative light," said Robins spokesman Roland Leach. "It was an honest mistake, to which we've personally counseled the parties involved and will provide them with remedial training and appropriate oversight to prevent this sort of inattention from occurring in the future."
The squadron reportedly noticed "a couple of days ago" and took any references of Dr. King in their flyer, however the event remains scheduled.
