Yesterday Prince George County Chief Henry Stawinski confirmed Detective Jacai Colson was fatally wounded by one of his fellow officers during a Sunday firefight involving three brothers. During the altercation Michael Ford, 22, opened fire at the District 3 Police Station complex while his brothers, 18-year-old Elijah and 21-year-old Malik Ford, recorded the scene nearby. According to officials Michael planned to die at he station that day, as he provided a video dictating his last will and testament just moments before.
Detective Colson was killed as he responded to the scene with other officers, and now officials are reporting the friendly fire was in fact deliberate. "This is a tragic set of circumstances precipitated by individuals who are in a position to prevent it from happening in the first place," stated Chief Stawinski. "If it wasn't for that, then our officers aren't in the position where they are fearing for their lives trying to defend one another, this doesn't happen at all."
Stawinski stressed the shot was fired under "chaotic" circumstances. Of the six officers involved, four used their weapons, but there are still several who have yet released a statement.
