Cardell Hayes was indicted on second degree murder charges in the death of former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith on Thursday (April 28). Hayes was also charged with second-degree attempted murder after wounding Smith's wife Racquel twice in the leg. The accuser pleaded not guilty to all charges, including aggravated assault with a firearm and aggravated criminal damage to a vehicle, and he's currently being held on a $1.75 million bond.
Peter Thomson, the attorney representing Smith's family, spoke on the indictment, telling media that he wasn't surprised at the decision, and adding that he's confident that Hayes will be convicted on all counts.
"We're not surprised. And we're very confident that once all the facts are in evidence, then the defendant will be convicted on all counts. While nothing can relieve the pain that Racquel and her family are dealing with, we feel this is a step in the right direction toward justice."
