The transferring of a child from the custody of one grandmother to the other turned violent on Sunday, November 27, and ended in a shootout with a police officer, leaving one woman wounded and the other behind bars.

Carla Hawkins, 55, is currently recuperating from a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the neck after she was fired on by 53-year-old Janice Brown while swapping custody of their grandchild. Hawkins and Brown reportedly found themselves embroiled in an argument in the parking lot of a Dallas Walmart, where they met up at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening. Details on exactly what led to hostilities boiling over haven't been made available to the press, but according to reports, an off-duty Fannin County officer who happened to be in the store at the time of the shooting was able to spring on to the scene and catch up to Brown as she attempted to flee. Before she was apprehended Brown and the officer exchanged fire, with Brown having fired the first shot, authorities say.

Brown was arrested and booked for aggravated assault on a public servant. She and Hawkins are being referred to court to have their case, and any impending charges related to the assault on Hawkins, determined by a Dallas County grand jury.
