A young pregnant woman was killed by police gunfire in a shootout between officers and a suspected drug dealer in Gifford, Florida this past Sunday. According to police, Alteria Woods, 21, was shot by police as Andrew Coffee, her boyfriend, used her body as protection.
"Unfortunately, one of the rounds fired by a swat team member struck an innocent person that Andrew Coffee IV cowardly was using as protection … while firing on law enforcement officers," Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar said.
Woods was four months pregnant. Coffee was not injured, police said.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning. Coffee, 23, fired on officers as they tried to execute a search warrant at the "known drug house."
Loar said Woods was an "innocent victim."
