Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving was named the cover athlete for NBA 2K18's Standard Edition on Thursday, June 1. He has been chosen to balance NBA 2K's selection of Shaquille O'Neal as the Legend Edition's cover star, one year after Paul George and Kobe Bryant graced the covers, respectively.

“It is well known that I’m an avid player of this series and I am honored to be the cover athlete of NBA 2K18,” Irving said, in a statement issued to express his gratitude for the honor. “It’s surreal to be featured on the cover and I can’t wait to dominate on the virtual court with all of my fans this fall.”

Heading into his third straight NBA Finals, there are a good many fans who favor Golden State, but won't sleep on Cleveland out of respect for Irving's ability to break a defense down. The 2016-17 season was arguably his best, with the four-time All-Star averaging 3.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and a career-high 25.2 points. Cleveland has proclaimed that all players are healthy and it will be playing with a full deck, thus leaving plenty of opportunities for Irving to put on a performance or two that could boost demand for the $59.99 game upon it's September 15 pre-order date.
