Kobe Bryant’s time in the NBA was coveted by fans and his fellow players, and now according to reports, the retired player’s jersey is set to be retired as well. Kobe Bryant previously retired after the end of the 2015-2016 season, after playing with the Lakers for the entirety of his 20-year career. Kobe put on a masterful performance scoring 60 points in a win against the Utah Jazz.
According to TMZ, the Lakers have plans to put Kobe’s jersey away on December 18, the day that the Lakers play the Golden State Warriors. Reports noted that the Lakers sent out a letter to season ticket holders saying “hold on to your tickets for the game on December 18,” because a “special event” is taking place that night.
There is no word on which of Kobe’s jersey numbers— 8 or 24 will be retired. Kobe wore number 8 from his rookie year in 1996 all the way to 2006, then switched his number to 24 for the rest of his time in the league. Bryant’s retired jersey will join the ranks of other retired franchise players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Shaquille O’Neal, and more.
