If it were up to Steph Curry, the Golden State Warriors would not be accepting the White House's invitation to meet with the President, in honor of the team's 2016-17 championship run. Curry first went public about his preference to boycott the traditional meet-and-greet back in June, but he did acknowledge at that time that the organization had established it would be a team decision and that he'd respect whatever direction they collectively choose to go in as it concerns the visit. During Warriors Media Day on Friday, September 22, the former unanimous MVP echoed those same sentiments, declaring that his vote will be to abstain when the team meets to get a consensus in the coming days.
"We have an opportunity to send a statement that hopefully encourages unity, encourages us to appreciate what it means to be American, and stand for something," Curry told reporters. But as he stated early in the Summer, whether or not he is actually present at the juncture will not depend on his individual choice. When presented with a recent quote from teammate Kevin Durant, who said he doesn't respect the man in the Oval Office, Curry replied that he is on that "same tip." Whether or not Curry winds up posted behind Trump for a classic group photo, his position on the current administration hasn't changed, he says.
"I don't wanna go. That's the nucleus of my belief. It's not just me going to the White House. If it was, this would be a pretty short conversation. But it's the organization, it's the team. It's hard to say, because I don't know exactly what we're gonna do. If we do go, if we don't, whatever. My beliefs stay the same," Curry told the media. Curry joins Durant and Andre Iguodala as Warriors players who have openly denounced the trip. Where everyone else stands is anybody's guess, although even coach Steve Kerr has been critical of Trump's first nine months as the nation's leader.
Draymond Green also responded to reporters' inquiry into the impending decision, stating: “It may not be the most popular thing or whatever we decide. But at the end of the day, we are the ones to decide to attend. It’s only right that we all decide together. It’s not just one person’s choice. It’ll be between all of us. We’ll come up with a decision and then go from there.”
