San Antonio Spurs head coach Greg Popovich spoke out in agreement with NFL players who protested during the national anthem over the weekend. According to Popovich, a protest should be "uncomfortable" because it will help individuals unaffected a reason to take up the cause.
"Race is the elephant in the room, and we all understand that," Popovich said on Monday during Spurs' media day after being asked his feelings on Trump's comments criticizing NFL Players. "But unless it is talked about constantly it's not going to get better."
Popovich, who in the past has given his insight on racism in the U.S, explained that the role of protesters should be to make those unaffected annoyed until the problem is addressed. "There has to be an uncomfortable element in the discourse for anything to change, Whether it's the LGBT movement, or women suffrage, race."
Popovich went on to say he believes white people, in general, should understand that they are afforded a headstart in this country that many don't receive. "People have to be made uncomfortable and especially white people because we're comfortable. We still have no clue of what being born white means."
Popovich went on to say, "It's like your at the 50-meter mark in the 100-meter dash. You got that kind of lead because, yes, you are white."
