R. Kelly’s former girlfriend, Kitti Jones, spoke out about the alleged physical and emotional abuse she suffered from the singer in an interview with Rolling Stone.
Jones talks about how she met Kelly back in 2011 at an after-party while she was working as a DJ for a Dallas radio station. She says that Kelly offered to double her salary and that he wanted her to meet his female friends. “He said, ‘I have friends and I have girls I’ve raised.’ I didn’t know what he meant by ‘raised’ at the time. He said, ‘I eventually want you to meet them, but I want to make sure you’re mentally ready for that.'”
Eventually, in November she had quit her job, sold her car, and moved into Kelly’s Chicago apartment — where he had rules about what and when she could eat, when she could go to the bathroom, what she could wear, etc. Jones also says he physically abused her. Jones says a month after her move, things quickly escalated after she confronted Kelly about the videotape that was at the center of his 2008 child pornography case. Kelly apparently berated her, slapped her and kicked her multiple times. "I was putting my hand over my face and telling him I was sorry," Jones says. "He would start kicking me, telling me I was a stupid b**** [and] don't ever get in his business."
In January 2013, Kelly moved Jones from his apartment to a nearby recording studio. The studio had several rooms for living quarters, where Jones and other girlfriends lived. The women were kept separate from each other, and cameras monitored their every move.
According to Rolling Stone, two months into living in the studio, Jones says, Kelly began using starvation on her as punishment for not following his orders. She went on to explain how the longest she went without food was two and a half days, though single days without a meal were not uncommon. In March 2013, she received oral sex from another woman Kelly brought into the room. "He told me, ‘I raised her. I’ve trained this b****. This is my pet.'"
She continues, “He videotapes everything that he does, and sometimes he’ll just make you watch what he’s done to other girls or girls that he had be together. He would masturbate to that and then have you give him oral sex while he’s watching what he did with somebody else on his iPad.” Jones claims her coerced sexual encounters with women became more frequent as time went on.
Jones says she became suicidal and even contemplated murder. “I just said, ‘I’m gonna kill myself and it’s gonna be his fault. I can either kill myself or kill him. What use am I when I walk out of here?'” She did eventually find a way to escape the horrific setting. She told Kelly she was going back to visit her son in Dallas, which resulted in her leaving and never returning.
Later that year, she and Kelly met up in Dallas, where the singer allegedly attacked her again. “I walked on the bus and I was like, ‘Hey daddy!’ And I went to go hug him and he was like, ‘B****, I’m not giving you s***’ and he was just attacking me. I knew he wasn’t going to kill me, but it was a lot of force. I was thinking, ‘I’m not going to call the police.’ I just felt so stupid."
Jones goes on to say, “By me being silent, it allowed him to feel untouchable, that he could keep things going as long as he could pay people off and put enough fear and shame in us that you would never speak on it again. Staying silent absolutely protects your abuser.”
