“On this day we become legendary.”
Colin Kaepernick has single-handily turned the NFL on its head. He’s brought light to issues that have been plaguing America and has caused scores of people to stand behind or rally against him. It’s almost impossible to look at any news outlet and not see his name be brought up over 24-hours. Kaepernick has left a mark that will remain in sports history forever.
Another man who also impacted sports in a legendary way has come forward in his support of Kaepernick saying that he’s, “this generation's Muhammad Ali.” The man behind this statement is an Olympic legend, John Carlos.
John Carlos is best known for raising his fist in support of black rights during the award ceremony of the 1969 Olympic games. This gesture caused him and Jesse Owens mountains of hardship, death threats and caused them to be blocked from potential opportunities.
Carlos is a staunch supporter of Kaepernick and said "Mr. Kaepernick, who needs no introduction, is this generation's iconic civil rights leader," Carlos said.
He further explained, "through his commitment and sacrifice to speak about the awareness of police brutality against blacks in America, Kaepernick has cemented his status in my books as one of many great individuals whose name will be spoken alongside the likes of Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson, Dr. Tommie Smith, Peter Norman, and myself."
Many continue to support what Kaepernick is doing including Jay Z who recently sported a jersey with Kaepernick’s name on it during his performance on SNL.
