The United States’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over three million cases, with many states putting the economy over citizens’ health. Now, a Republican senator from Alabama has gone on record and said he wants “more people” to contract the virus.

While speaking to reporters, Senator Del Marsh Anniston said, "I'm not as concerned as much with the number of cases. In fact, quite honestly, I want to see more people because we start reaching an immunity if more people have it and get through it. I don't want any deaths, as few as possible in the state."

He continued saying, “So those people who are susceptible to the disease, especially those with preexisting conditions and the elderly population, those folks we do all we can to protect them. But I'm not concerned." Anniston’s statement comes as it was revealed that Alabama added over 9,000 cases of coronavirus in the past week. Previously, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned the general public against relying on immunity to combat COVID-19.
