Jameis Winston, the Heisman trophy-winning quarterback for FSU, was given a citation on Tuesday night, for neglecting to pay for $32.72 worth of crab legs and crawfish when he walked out of a Publix grocery store in Tallahassee, Florida. Leon County Director of Law Enforcement Michael Wood, stated that Jameis "was very cooperative and he seemed fairly honest in that he did not pay for the item." Jameis claimed that he simply forgot to pay for the items before he walked out, and released the following statement addressing the matter:
"I went to the supermarket with the intent to purchase dinner but made a terrible mistake for which I'm taking full responsibility. In a moment of youthful ignorance, I walked out of the store without paying for one of my items.
"I realize that I am in the public spotlight and my conduct needs to be above reproach. Over the last year I've learned that my accomplishments on the fields can be a wonderful thing for my school, teammates, friends, and family. At the same time, I must realize that my mistakes are magnified and can bring great embarrassment to all those who support me every day."
Since he has a clean record with no prior offenses, Jameis has seven days to report to Leon County's new civil citation program, which will keep his record clean if he completes the 20 hours of required community service for the offence. FSU baseball coach Mike Martin has also suspended Winston until he is able to complete his required community service, and FSU football coach, Jimbo Fisher, supports the suspension.
Even though it seems clear that Winston had no intention of actually stealing the crab legs and crawfish, Twitter still jumped at the opportunity to bombard him with jokes about the subject. Loads of memes were created showing Winston in various situations getting his hands on some tasty crab legs.
