The Washington Redskins' trademark, which was established back in 1967, was effectively cancelled by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board today, June 18th.  They cancelled six trademark registrations which were owned by the Washington Redskins, due to the name "Redskins" and the logo being offensive to Native Americans, and most everyone else for that matter.

The cancellation of the trademark doesn't mean that the team can't use the "Redskins" name anymore; however, the issue is that they will lose trademark protection which will allow others to have the freedom to sell the team's merchandise independently.  The Redskins franchise does have the opportunity to appeal the ruling and get the trademark rights reinstated.

Since news broke that the team name and logo may be switched, fans have taken to Twitter to create their own versions of new Redskins names and logos.
