Some very unfortunate news was delivered to the family of slain 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley Jones on Wednesday, January 28th, when they were informed that the failed case against Detroit police officer Joseph Weekley will not be retried for a third time.

"Today we personally informed the family of Aiyana Stanley–Jones that we have made a decision that we would not be going to trial for a third time in the Joseph Weekley case," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy told the Stanley-Jones family.

The incident that led to Aiyana's tragic death occurred on May 16th, 2010, when the Detroit Police Department's Special Response Team conducted a raid on Aiyana's home shortly after midnight.  They were in pursuit of a murder suspect, and Officer Weekley was the first to rush through the front door after another officer allegedly threw a flashbang grenade inside.  He claims that the grenade impaired his vision and when he entered the property, he let off a shot which struck and killed 7-year-old Aiyana who had been sleeping on the couch with her grandmother.  Weekley claims that her grandmother hit his gun which is what caused him to shoot, but she denies there being any truth to that claim.

The question of why Weekley had his finger on the trigger to begin with while entering the home is one of the primary reasons that this case has raised so many eyebrows over the course of two failed trials.  The first trial was deemed a mistrial back in 2013, while the second, which occurred in 2014, saw the same fate after the jury had too much difficulty considering a lesser charge for Weekley after Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway dismissed the manslaughter charge initially set against him.

Unfortunately for Aiyana Stanley-Jones' family, it seems that they will not see any justice for the killing of their innocent little girl.
