Leonard Nimoy, best known for his role as chief data officer Mr. Spock on the iconic television show Star Trek, has passed away at the age of 83. Nimoy's son, Adam Nimoy, shared the sad news today (2/27) that his father died of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at his Los Angeles home.

While Nimoy enjoyed an expansive acting career, including playing a master of disguise on the "Mission Impossible" television series, he was known as the half-vulcan, half-human Mr. Spock to most, the more logical counterpart to William Shatner's more emotional character, Captain Kirk. The role became such a big part of his life that he tried to escape it by titling his autobiography "I Am Not Spock" (1975). He embraced the iconic role when writing his second bio, however, titled "I Am Spock" (1995). Nimoy was also an accomplished stage actor, appearing in productions of "A Streetcar Named Desire," ''Cat on a Hot Tim Roof," ''Fiddler on the Roof," ''The King and I," ''My Fair Lady" and "Equus."

Rest in peace Leonard Nimoy.
