US magistrate Jim Moody sentenced reggae artist Buju Banton to a decade behind bars for conspiring to negotiate a drug deal at a police controlled wharehouse in Florida.

Pleas for leniency from his family and friends, including actor Danny Glover, fell on deaf ears as the judge slapped him with the sentence. Banton's attorney said he will appeal the sentence.

Banton was found guilty of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five or more kilograms of cocaine. The US government built their case around wiretap and video evidence which caught Banton tasting cocaine and making several statements concerning the purchasee and sale of large amounts of the drug.
