A rather odd sequence of events led to a teenager actually saving the police officer's life who was processing him into the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, jailhouse back in September, 2014.

Jamal Rutledge was sitting handcuffed while Officer Franklin Foulks booked him into jail for charges of criminal mischief and burglary, when suddenly, Officer Foulks fell out of his chair and landed on the floor with a thudding impact.  Baffled by what had just happened, Rutledge rose to his feet with his hands still cuffed behind his back and inspected Foulks, who lay before him grasping his chest in agony.

Rutledge then walked to the gated door and kicked it repeatedly as he called for help from nearby officers.  As it turned out, Foulks was suffering from a serious heart attack that actually halted the function of his heart and required the assisting officers to use a defibrillator to get it pumping again.  Once stabilized, Foulks was rushed to a nearby hospital where he received emergency medical attention.  According to doctors who tended to Foulks' medical emergency, if Rutledge had waited any longer to notify the other officers of Foulks' status, he would've surely died.

As a result, Rutledge, along with three other officers who responded to Foulks' near-fatal heart attack, will be publicly honored for their acts of heroism during a meeting with the Fort Lauderdale City Commission later this month.
