A California man is serving 40 days in jail and a lifetime of embarrassment in Oregon after he was caught punching himself in the face and blaming it on police officers.

Officials told NBC News about the bizarre incident that recently went viral. Aleksander R. Tomaszewski was detained by police on suspicion of a sex abuse case. While in police custody, Tomaszewski claimed he was brutally assaulted by the officers. Little did the 33-year-old know that a camera was rolling as he punched himself 45 times.

"When he learned that the incident was caught on camera, he admitted that he thought making the claim would get him released." Sgt. Laurie Carver said.

He also blamed the assault on the detectives who questioned him earlier and even signed a written statement.

Tomaszewski was charged with initiating a false report and attempted coercion. While the incident happened on Feb 11, police wanted to trim down the lengthy video of him assaulting himself before releasing it to the public.

While the sex abuse charges were dismissed, Tomaszewski was given a $600 fine and 36 months of probation.
