In a recent interview with Rolling Out, ASAP Rocky made comments related to being Black in America that offended many and was also taken as a slight to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The rapper said "So every time something happens because I'm Black I gotta stand up? Who the f**k am I, Al Sharpton now? I'm A$AP Rocky. I did not sign up to be no political activist... I don't wanna talk about no f*****g Ferguson and s**t because I don't live over there! I live in f*****g Soho and Beverly Hills. I can't relate." Many have responded to his comments, including former NBA player Stephen Jackson who said the rapper could no longer use the term "trill."
Now, the Harlem rapper has taken to Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club to clear up that he is not anti-Black Lives Matter. In the interview, the rapper said "I feel like that whole interview was taken out of context. I feel terrible as a black man and as an American. I just don't understand how they keep saying a dark-skinned n*gga don't like black people. It's because you do these interviews with these European reporters who wanna make a name for themselves and they take your sh*t out of context. Most people who read that interview only read that section." Rocky went on to clear up his statement, saying "You got your favorite rapper today, Thug, Future, Drake. You don't always hear their content being about political sh*t. I feel like why put me on [a] pedestal like that especially when I'm not asking for that? I wanna make music and inspire and promote peace. At a time like this, I don't have all the answers. I'm not trying run for Congress, I'm not trying to run for office. I don't have all the answers. I wanna promote prosperity, especially for black people. Especially for just young people, ambitious people, the underprivileged. I'm not here to talk about supremacy; I'm not here to talk about who's dominant."
Rocky also went on to say that he felt like he was misquoted, but also admitted that he misspoke on what was happening in the interview.
