Nas is somewhere smiling.
The Queensbridge projects are one of the largest public housing developments in the nation, having gained notoriety after Nas released his critically acclaimed "Illmatic" depicting day to day life in The Bridge. It has been one year since the last shooting in the projects and the neighborhood is celebrating what Mayor Bill De Blasio is calling "a year of golden silence." Residents rejoice that they no longer walk through their neighborhood in fear.
A coalition called 696 Queensbridge is responsible for much of the effort along with the city funding additional lights, cameras and police protection. The coalition works directly with people from the neighborhood to mediate and help educate the youth on consequences that pair with violence. Cheers to another year of peace.
