Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel and the three other men sentenced to life for their involvement in the 2014 murder of Clive "Lizard" Williams were granted leave to appeal their conviction and sentence on Wednesday.
Kartel hopes to have his murder conviction and sentence overturned.
Kartel's attorney said, "It's the first but critical step in the appeal process." As it currently stands, Kartel will be eligible for parole after 35 years.
An attorney representing one of Kartel's co-accused was cautiously optimistic: "They stand a good chance of winning the appeal," one said.
