New York rapper China Mac was released from prison on Monday, May 22, and wasted no time before getting back on the grind that had his name bubbling in the streets before he was bagged for a parole violation last year.
The January 2016 arrest remains a controversial one that raised eyebrows due to its timing. While Mac's reputation precedes him due to his past association with Chinatown's once notorious Ghost Shadows Gang, and a criminal record that includes a shooting during a clash with rapper Jin's crew, that resulted in an 11-year jail sentence; his supporters argue that he had been focused on getting his career off of the ground, with notable Jadakiss and Dave East collaborations, when he was suddenly sent back to Rikers. Many cite his recording of the controversial anti-police brutality track "Buck A Cop," having predated his detainment, and believe it may have prompted law enforcement to target Mac.
"Guess who's back.. get some grub.. go check in with parole and straight to the studio," Mac wrote on his Facebook page upon release. His freedom had been anticipated by such peers as former collaborator Young Ma, who was blasting their track "Say A Prayer" while shouting him out via video recording earlier this month. By Monday evening friends and fans had convened for a China Mac release party hosted by DJ Miss Milan and HD-MI at I.M.A.G.E. Gallery in his native Brooklyn.
