Three unreleased Kanye West tracks briefly surfaced on the Internet late Monday, June 5, and made it as far as Youtube before nearly every trace of the songs were swiftly removed hours later. The tracks reportedly made it online courtesy of notorious leaker Music Mafia.
There is no telling whether the songs, titled "Can U Be," "Euro Switch Hands," and "Hold Tight" are works being fleshed out for the GOOD Music boss' forthcoming album, or if they are drafts that have been scrapped and were never intended for release. Reactions from fans seemed to suggest that most who've heard the music are hoping it isn't a reflection of what they can expect once the highly anticipated follow-up to The Life of Pablo drops, with many lamenting about the uninspiring sound and taking notice of the degree to which Ye underperforms in comparison to features like Migos, Young Thug, and A$AP Rocky.
In spite of the stylistic value of the mystery tracks, and the less than stellar lyrical craftsmanship Kanye displays, shock value is not an area that is lacking from the contents of the songs. The one particular song that is raising eyebrows is the "Hold Tight" track, in which Yeezy rhymes, "And I just figured out, the whole time, I was acting like I'm white," on the hook.
Many will be on the lookout for how Kanye comes across on his next project, with "I want the old Kanye" having become something of a mantra among his fans over the past few years, as he's gradually drawn away from the socially conscious subject matter he helped the mainstream adapt to in the early and mid-2000's. A series of bizarre events has relegated the star rapper/producer to relative obscurity over the past six months or so, with a concert meltdown during which he espoused support for Donald Trump being followed up by a stint in the hospital. Months later Kanye would further disturb his longing day-one fanbase when he became one of the first celebrities to meet up with Trump during his early days in office.
Kanye is reported to be knee-deep in the recording process at the present time, and was recently said to have flown Pusha T out to his retreat in the mountains of Wyoming, to help ground him in his writing.
