After 24-years of ownership over the NBA club, Leslie Alexander is selling the Houston Rockets, team CEO Tad Brown announced on Monday, July 17.
With the sale, Alexander stands to make more than double what he put up in 1993 when the attorney-turned-business magnate paid $85 million for a team on the brink of its first and second championships in back to back seasons. The Rockets are now said to be worth $1.65 billion; a far cry from the $4 million Houston rap native Travis Scott is reportedly worth. Upon learning that his hometown team was up for grabs, Scott expressed his yearning to put a bid out for its purchase, over social media. "I'm buying," he simply wrote in the comment section of the story he came across on the announcement.
In a statement issued via an official team release, Alexander confirmed his decision to sell and declared it an honor to have been part of the 50-year-old franchise. “I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the fans, partners, city officials and employees who care so deeply for this team. I’ve made this decision after much deliberation with my family and friends, and do so knowing the franchise is in great shape with the players, coaches, and management team in place. CEO Tad Brown will oversee the sales process with the league office, supported by my management team,” he wrote.
