It's long been accepted that female rappers have faced an uphill battle to gain their due recognition, a struggle that's been going on ever since spitters like MC Lyte laid down tracks back in the late '80s. According to female rap superstar Nicki Minaj, not a whole lot has changed when it comes to the achievements of women in rap since the genre's beginnings.

Minaj took on the status quo in a Twitter rant on Wednesday where she highlighted the disparities she's experienced in the industry.

"In any field, women must work TWICE as hard to even get HALF the respect her male counterparts get. When does this stop?" began the Queens rapper.

Nicki's next tweet expressed her belief that lyricists aren't quick to hop on a track with a rapper if she's female.

"The greats collaborated w/Drake, Kendrick & Jcole b/c they’re dope MC’s. They collab’d w/nicki cuz someone pulled a gun to their heads..."

She then called out the industry on what she sees as a double standard.

"Putting ppl in the same sentence as me after my 10 years of consistent winning. What are you teaching THEM? They’d never do this to a man."
