According to reports, United States officials have confirmed to the press that they are looking into the alleged murder of a Green Beret by two Navy SEALs that took place in June 2017 in Mali. The man allegedly murdered was Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar. His death reportedly occurred at a U.S. government compound located near the American Embassy in Bamako, the capital of Mali. CNN reported that Naval Criminal Investigative Service spokesman Ed Bulce said Melgar was a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant.
Officials who were investigating Melgar’s death at the time reported the incident as a homicide. The investigation’s jurisdiction shifted from the Army to the Navy’s investigation services this past September. According to a U.S. official aware of the case’s details, the shift of jurisdiction means that Navy personnel are amongst those currently being investigated. The medical examiner on the case wrote that Melgar’s cause of death was asphyxiation. The two Navy SEALs who were accused of the murder were flown out of Mali and places on administrative leave according to the New York Times.
News of Melgar’s death isn’t the first one to arise in recent months, as four American soldiers were recently killed via an ambush in Niger, which is not too far from where Melgar was allegedly murdered.
