Brianna Brochu will not face hate crime charges. She pleaded not guilty on Monday (Dec. 18). Brochu claimed that her roommate, Chennel “Jazzy Rowe,” recorded footage of her snoring and posted it online (which led to her allegedly "poisoning" Jazzy). The NAACP protested following the announcement. NAACP President Scot X. Esdaile released a statement saying: “We are very very disappointed with the prosectors … not pressing this case hard enough.” A jury trial is scheduled to continue on Jan. 29.

A former University of Hartford student named Brianna Brochu was charged with criminal mischief and breach of peace after she rubbed used tampons on her roommate, Jazzy Rowe’s belongings. According to NY Daily News, 18-year-old Brochu took to her Instagram to make racists posts calling her roommate a “Jamaican Barbie,” along with admitting that she tampered with her belongings.
Via her Instagram post, Brochu said she rubbed used tampons onto Rowe’s backpack. Along with that, she said that she licked her roommate's kitchenwares like plates, spoons, and forks. Once her roommate moved out after being harassed and bullied, Brochu allegedly took to her Instagram and said, “Finally did it yo girl got rid of her roommate!! After 1 1/2 month of spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions, rubbing used tampons [on] her backpack, putting her toothbrush places where the sun doesn’t shine, and so much more I can finally say goodbye Jamaican Barbie.”
Rowe took to Facebook to explain the situation, telling followers, “As a young African American woman I don’t want to become another statistic. When it comes to college incidents/crimes and racial cases justice needs to be served,” Rowe wrote. She added that the situation sounded like it was “straight out of a movie scene.”
Police reported that Brochu admitted to smearing the tampons on her ex-roommate’s backpack as well as licking the utensils, but “anything else she bragged about on social media was a lie in an attempt to ‘appear funny’.” Because of the disgusting acts committed by Brochu, her roommate took to Facebook to say that she suffered from “severe throat pain.”
Police arrested Brochu this past Saturday after launching an investigation into the crime. Not too long after the news broke, Brochu was expelled from the University of Hartford, with the school saying, “Racism and hatred will not be tolerated on this campus. period.”
