A recently released police dashcam video shows the moment a Minnesota police officer almost had his head taken off by a shotgun blast.

In the video released by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, La Crescent officer Ryan Quanrud can be seen approaching a vehicle after stopping it in the early morning hours of July 31 in Hokah in southeastern Minnesota.

As Quanrud neared the driver's side window, he saw a shotgun pointing out the window a split second before it went off. The weapon's blast is clearly visible in the dashcam footage as it just barely missed Quanrud's head.

The officer immediately retreated to the rear of the vehicle, drew his pistol and began firing on the rear windshield of the car. Also shooting at the suspects was another officer who had arrived on the scene.

The suspects continued to shoot at officers during the ensuing pursuit as the chase reached speeds between 90 and 100 miles per hour, eventually ending with the suspects crashing in a bean field.

Wyatt Robert Helfrich, of La Crosse, Wis., and William Gerald Wallraff, of Holmen, Wis., both 19, were eventually caught after a foot pursuit. They were charged with seven felony counts, including attempted first-degree murder of an officer, first-degree assault and fleeing a police officer.
