It didn't take long after NFL owner Jerry Richardson announced that he was selling the Carolina Panthers, for Sean Diddy Combs to express his interest in buying the team.
Within a couple of hours of Richardson releasing a statement to confirm that he is moving on from the football business, Diddy sent out a pair of tweets that read, "I would like to buy the @Panthers. Spread the word. Retweet," and "There are no majority African American NFL owners. Let’s make history," respectively.
At this point, there is no telling how urgent Richardson will be needing to make a sale and whether or not him possibly being forced out of the league will in any way work against him in the market. Since the NFL took over the investigation into sexual misconduct claims against him, there have been calls for the 81-year-old former player to be totally banned from the sport. Richardson's spur-of-the-moment decision to part ways from the franchise 22 years after he founded it would seem to indicate that he's got some clue about what course of action Commissioner Roger Goodell will take, and thus, would like nothing more than to cut down on the potential for the scandal to drag out in the media.
Seeing how the Buffalo Bills sold for $1.5 billion in 2014, experts are estimating the Panthers' value to exceed $2 billion, easily. It is a sum that Diddy may organize a group of partners to meet, but the price tag is not likely going to be one that he can afford to satisfy all by himself with his $820 million net worth. But that's not stopping him from pitching his interest to the public, and already publicizing his plans for the team, which include the signing of Colin Kaepernick.
"I will be the best NFL owner that you can imagine. I will immediately address the Colin Kaepernick situation and put him in the running for next year's starting quarterback. It's just competition, baby! It's just competition," Diddy said in a video message tailored for Carolina fans, that he posted to Instagram. "But also, I will have the best halftime show, the best selection of music and we will win multiple Super Bowls."
