An Ohio State Highway Patrol officer is recovering from a surgical procedure that he was forced to undergo after being maimed by an emotionally disturbed man that he confronted on the side of a Lorain County road on Thursday morning, January 11.

Trooper Lance Deshuk was able to locate 44-year-old Cornelious L. Carey, Jr. of Elyria at about half hour after the county Sheriff's Office received a 6:45 a.m. call about a man who fit his description stumbling alongside LaGrange Township traffic in an intoxicated fashion. As Deshuk slowed his patrol car down and began to veer towards the grass on Nickel Plate Diagonal Road near Biggs Road, Carey approached the hood of the vehicle and words were exchanged.

Deshuk continuously told Carey that he was stopping him to save him from danger, but Carey responded hastily, and seemingly grew frustrated with Deshuk continuing to grab his arm. After being asked to supply his ID, Carey was touched one more time and all chaos broke loose. He began swinging on Deshuk and flung him out of the dash camera's sight. Deshuk was able to sustain the punishment and still get the unhinged man in cuffs, but not before a piece of his ear had been bitten off.

Carey was placed under arrest and charged with felonious assault. He remains behind bars in Lorain County Jail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for January 22.
