Malik Yoba is showing off some serious acting chops in a new stage play that sees him dressed up in drag to channel a Black female fusion character.
A video clip that has been floating around social media presents a makeup-clad Yoba standing beside Broadway playwright and dramatist Maria Goodreaux to help plug the production of "Enough Vo5 for the Universe," which is nearing the end of its 12-show run at Theater for the New City in the East Village.
The Afro-futuristic comedy follows the developments of the last three Black women on earth as they seek out the last Black man, who went missing during a cataclysmic event. The story takes place in America in the year 2097, and features Yoba in a heroic, albeit controversial light. In the viral clip, the veteran actor infers that although some may find his performance impressive, it is not a role that he would have taken on for just anybody.
"I'm just trying to let y'all know, I ain't gonna do this for everybody, you know what I mean? So, I'm just gonna let y'all know how it go down for the get down: 'How Y'all doin'?'" Yoba said while expressing his pleasure to play the part for Goodreaux. "Everybody can't get me to do this thing, but the girl talked to me, I said: 'I'ma do this! I'ma turn this thing out for her.'"
