Kendrick Lamar added yet another classic performance to his reel of career highlights at the 60th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night, January 28.
Moments before the show kicked off; host James Corden told Ryan Seacrest on the Red Carpet that K. Dot had plans to electrify viewers with what was to be "quite possibly the most unique opening to a Grammys you’ve ever seen." And judging by the standing ovation he received from the crowd of musicians and fans packing Madison Square Garden, it soon became clear that the Compton rapper was effective in doing just that.
Kung Fu Kenny showed out with a succession of songs from the DAMN album that transitioned with the help of live interludes incorporated into the mix by Dave Chappelle.
First, it was "XXX," and then a once-in-a-lifetime rendition of "DNA," that was backed by the presence of Bono and his U2 bandmates. He also threw in his verses off of Rich The Kid's "New Freezer" and Jay Rock's "King's Dead." As Kendrick tore through his lyrics with rapid-fire precision, dancers dressed in military garb got busy behind him.
Kendrick Lamar has been known to bring imaginative performances to the stage since he went in alongside Imagine Dragons at the 2014 Grammy Awards. He would come back two years later to follow up his “m.A.A.d. City” and “Radioactive” numbers with the classic display he put on performing "Alright" and "The Blacker the Berry" surrounded by prison imagery in 2016.
How would you stack up his 2018 performance in comparison to the show he put on in past Grammy nights?
