An Oregon man who has been living in Dubai since 2008 is facing seven years in prison for using the word "b**ch" on social media, and was caught after being reported to authorities by his own wife, according to the Daily Mail.
Jordan Branford, originally from Eugene, lives in the United Arab Emirates where he works as a fitness trainer. A complaint was filed against the 44-year-old last year after Salma Ismail, his estranged Egyptian wife, reported him for using the curse word in an Instagram post.
In the since-deleted post, Branford reportedly didn't direct the word at anyone in particular, though he could have been referring to his wife.
"B**ch" is considered a highly offensive word in the socially conservative country and its use is outlawed.
Branford has been fined AED 250,000, or $68,000, for using the word. If he is unable to pay the fine he'll have to pay in another way -- by spending 209 months behind bars.
Considering he reportedly spent all his money on legal fees, Branford may very well have to pay off his debt by spending time in prison, where one day equals AED 100, or $27, towards his fine.
The Dubai government will hold onto Branford's passport until he either pays the fine in full or turns himself in.
