With reports coming in about fires being set, cars being vandalized, and property being destroyed around the city on Sunday night, February 4, officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were clearly overwhelmed in the hours that followed the Eagles victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XII.
Among the celebratory videos that have been circulating, is one in which a group of locals appear to have taken over and had their way with a Wawa convenience store.
A transcript of the PPD's scanner does document an incident at around 10:53 p.m. in which trespassers climbed four stories to occupy a ledge hanging over a Wawa. But absent from the scanner is report of a mob that flooded into one of the chain's stores and began throwing items around at one another. The incident would come to the public's attention via social media, as many of the transgressions of fanatic vandals have over the past 24 hours.
While some items were reportedly stolen in the chaos, most of the people who went storming through the establishment seemed to be more interested in having fun with the elements at their disposal. It is reported that the phrase “Everything is free!” was chanted as the group ransacked the space.
