The Black Lives Matter movement became one of the leading social and civil rights activist groups after recordings of police brutality reached feverish heights. Police brutality and the indifference of the justice system are not new issues, but the prevalence of camera phones and the creation of social media has made the recordings of law enforcement engaged in violent acts more accessible to the public. Black Lives Matter activist Muhiyidin Elamin Moye was a leader and a motivational speaker for the organization who fought for social justice in Charlestown, South Carolina last year. Tragically, Moye was shot and killed on Tuesday morning.
According to a statement by New Orleans Police Department spokesman Beau Tidwell, Moye was found at 1:25 a.m. in the 2200 block of Bienville Street in the New Orleans neighboorhood of Mid-City after he had been shot in the thigh. He was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his wound shortly after. Although it was not stated, Moye's thigh wound is speculated to have pierced an important artery, causing him to bleed out. A GoFundMe was created for Moye's memorial service. His niece set $7,500 as the goal, but she has already raised $14,791. New Orleans has already recorded 25 murders this year.
