After the tragic shooting this week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, America is collectively searching for answers as to how we can prevent something like this from happening again. Days after the shooting President Trump stated that arming teachers is the best way to help prevent mass shootings on school campuses. The controversial remarks were met with skepticism but it seems Trump is doubling down on his comments.

On Saturday, the president took to Twitter to further reiterate his stance on the matter. He claims that more guns on school campuses would deter people from committing gun violence. He also stated however, that the decision to arm educators should be left up to individual states.

“Armed Educators (and trusted people who work within a school) love our students and will protect them,” Trump wrote. “Very smart people. Must be firearms adept & have annual training. Should get yearly bonus. Shootings will not happen again - a big & very inexpensive deterrent. Up to States.” (@realdonaldtrump)

Earlier in the week Trump said that schools designated as “gun-free zones” put more lives at risk. According to him gun free campuses would be “a magnet for bad people.” People opposing Trump on the issue make the obvious point that there was an armed resource officer present at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on the day of the shooting. Most schools can barely afford new books, arming teachers and providing training probably isn't the most practical way to solve the issue.
