Less than 24-hours after his release from the Seahawks marked the end of an outstanding seven-year run in Seattle, Richard Sherman struck a deal that will bring him to his former rival San Francisco 49ers, on Saturday night, March 10.
Reports noted Sherman met with the organization early on in the day in order to discuss how rehabilitation of the Achilles he tore in 2017 is coming along. The injury wound up taking Sherman out for the better part of the second half of the season, and along with a bone spur in his other leg - had been a source of concern for prospective teams. Still, Sherman is said to have received interest from the Packers, Lions, Titans, Buccaneers, Texans, and Raiders, before agreeing to terms with the Niners.
Sherman's signing brings him back to the Bay Area where he first built his rep as a Stanford All-American. The deal is reported to be worth $39.15 million over three years.
By letting the perennial All-Pro cornerback go Seattle was able to free up $11 million cap space. In turn, San Francisco will shore up a secondary that allowed a second-worst QBR (quarterback rating) of 87 this past season. All eyes will be on the two NFC West teams to see how they stack up in light of recent offseason moves.
