A former Supreme Court Justice is calling for the repeal of the Second Amendment, urging that anti-gun activist should force lawmakers to get rid of the outdated part of the constitution.
In an op-ed piece published in The New York Times on Tuesday, John Paul Stevens, a Republican, said that its time for activists to up the ante on their fight for gun control. According to the former Justice, repealing the Second Amendment will lead to a more lasting change in the country than just changing the requirements on age or background checks to buy a gun.
“That support is a clear sign to lawmakers to enact legislation prohibiting civilian ownership of semiautomatic weapons, increasing the minimum age to buy a gun from 18 to 21 years old, and establishing more comprehensive background checks on all purchasers of firearms," Stevens wrote.
He continued, “But the demonstrators should seek more effective and more lasting reform. They should demand a repeal of the Second Amendment."
Stevens would go on to state that the Amendment was created to provide security for “separate states” during the 18th century to stand against a national standing army. However, according to Stevens, that reason is not good enough for present-day Americans. “Today that concern is a relic of the 18th century.” wrote Stevens
