Nicki Minaj's verse on Kanye West's hit "Monster" is legendary. The Iconic verse showed the world that Minaj was lyrically adept enough to keep up with, and even surpass, the likes of West, JAY-Z, and Rick Ross, who were all featured on the song together. Many hip-hop heads like to claim that Minaj's "Monster" verse was the most lyrically astonishing rap of her career. Whether you agree with that opinion or not, it's hard to argue that Minaj didn't absolutely slaughter that record.
Minaj sat down with Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 radio program last week and revealed the process behind constructing the monumental verse. "With Kanye, I was extremely nervous," she begins. "I was out in Hawaii, and I had written a verse for 'Monster' and he says, 'I think you can do better.'" Now that sounds like Kanye West.
"So he was just like, maybe just sit there and start writing out not raps, but just lines of what I wanted to say. And he told me 'Now put that into raps,'" continued Minaj. "And I was like, okay, Kanye's a genius and he created a genius moment... Even like, the verse, I did a lot of takes of that, what people have come to know as the 'Monster' verse. I did a lot of takes of that. And he went back and took some of the parts I took out and said 'No, you need that in.'"
