Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds was sentenced to six months for tax fraud that ends a three-year legal battle that saw Reynolds being arrested a previous time for violating his probation.
Reynolds acted as his own legal counsel in the case and told the judge that he felt that he had been unfairly portrayed as someone who does not respect their country or the legal system. While speaking to reporters after the sentencing, Reynolds revealed that he will be moving back to South Africa with his daughter after he completes his sentence.
“I’m going to do this time, and I’m going home to Africa. That’s just how it is. I’ve given up on America because how long do African-Americans put up with this nonsense? No matter what you think of my sentence — or me — why is there such a bias when it comes to sentencing African-Americans?”
