Television writer Issa Rae trashed Kanye’s “blackness” during a gig hosting the CFDAAwards earlier this week.“I’m about as fashionable as Kanye is black,” she said, according to USA Today. “Only when it’s convenient. That joke was my choice, just like slavery.” The event was attended by Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian West who received the Influencer Award.
Issa was referencing Kanye’s now infamous comments made during a TMZ interview where he stated that “400 years of slavery sounds like a choice.” He later attempted to clarify the comment when he tweeted that he was referring to mental slavery.
Despite the immense backlash from his peers, his latest “Ye” album still went on to top the charts and his lyrics on the project touch on a plethora of topics including how that interview ended up affecting his relationship with his wife. Kanye admits that Kim tore him a new one after the appearance on TMZ and warned him not to go off before he got there.
But that has never stopped Kanye from speaking his mind. He also said that his album was a lot more political before that interview and admitted to changing some of the songs. It now focuses mostly on his mental health and relationship with his wife and daughters.
