When it comes to rap music and the traditions of emceeing, there is a thin line between pulling lyrics from a predecessor's song as a form of paying homage - and practically ripping that artist's entire verse. One veteran rapper recently took a page out of Drake's book and flipped it on him, by drawing up an invoice for "ghostwriting" services rendered and having it sent to the OVO head.
Fans will recall how Drizzy put a cherry on top of his "Duppy Freestyle" diss track by actually following through on Pusha-T's tweet daring him to make good on the part of the song where he tells Kanye that he can expect an invoice for helping the GOOD Music president sell an additional 20,000 copies of Daytona. Well, Cali O.G. Rappin' 4-Tay was apparently paying just as much attention to Drake's antics as he was paying to the Scorpion rap star's verse on Y.G.'s "Who Do You Love?"
Anyone old enough to remember can listen to the 6-God's feature and tell how he switched up some words, but ultimately patterned his part after 4-Tay's opening bars on "Playaz Circle." In his invoice, Rappin' 4-Tay would go on to request a payment of $100K for his contribution to the West Coast banger.
See a comparison of their opening bars to judge for yourself whether or not 4-Tay has got a case:
Rappin' 4-Tay
I got a ho named Reel-to-Reel
She got a buddy named SP 12, now you know the deal
We gets freaky in the studio late night
That's why the beats that you hear are coming real tight
Something to roll to, something to stroll to
If you's a playa in the game this will hold you
Mo money, mo money for the bank roll
Stick to the script, don't slip in the '94
A lot of fools put salt in the game
To where these women get the notion that they running the game
