New details are being clarified in the alleged hate crime on Jussie Smollett, as sources close to the actor have spoken to TMZ to clear up the confusion behind some conflicting reports. Although a Chicago police official had previously stated that Smollett had refused to hand over his phone after they arrived on the scene, the sources say that the actor was simply uncomfortable with that and respectfully declined, though he never refused any direct orders. With that said, they say Smollett is willing to provide his phone records, and he's currently in the process of gathering them.

Otherwise, the sources also wished to clarify the details in regards to the story's MAGA affiliation, as despite reports that said the two assailants were wearing the actual hats, the sources make clear that wasn't the case. Instead, they say that the men screamed "MAGA country" during the attack, while details in the media have been misconstrued since the original report.

Otherwise, the sources explain why Smollett had the rope around his neck long after the alleged attack, as the actor's intent was to "preserve the evidence."
