The Super Bowl is usually known for entertaining commercials, yet one new advertisement might have been deemed too controversial to be included in the broadcast. In the new commercial for AmmoniaSport, a company that sells smelling salts, porn star Mia Khalifa can be seen ingesting the chemical compounds which lead to some dramatic results. Playing up their intended effects, Khalifa is seen running full-speed at former NFL football player, Steve Smith, using perfect form to send him to the floor.
Over the years, smelling salts have seemingly become an essential part of NFL gamedays, with numerous all-pro athletes using the substance to give them a supposed edge. The science behind the product is that it triggers an inhalation reflex by irritating the mucous membranes of the nose and lungs, thus causing the muscles that control breathing to work faster. Meanwhile, since smelling salts produce only a small amount of ammonia gas, it's suggested that situational use is not thought to be particularly harmful. For that reason, the likes of Ezekiel Elliot and Clay Matthews help make up the roughly 80% of NFL players that use smelling salts, despite the fact that there's zero evidence that they provide any benefit.
All the same, there is clearly a market for the stimulants, while Khalifa took to social media to speak on its value. "AmmoniaSport is what athletes are using, making faces, and then going out there and crushing it," the porn star said in the paid advertisement, "AKA: Athletic smelling salts (ampules), designed for optimal focus and ampedness."
Elsewhere in the YouTube description to the new commercial, the product promotes itself as being a good way to prank your friends "by saying it’s a perfume sample, or holding it under your boyfriend's nose while he sleeps to see his reaction."
Due it's popularity, AmmoniaSport appears to be a viable commodity in a climate where everyone is looking for a competitive edge.
