During a week that has seen Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam come under fire for his admittance to using blackface, the storied fashion house Gucci is now under similar fire. Gucci debuted its new wool balaclava jumper but the piece conjured up images of the minstrelsy and blackface. To make matters worse, the jumper was modeled by a white woman.
Gucci issued a statement after much backlash from the item, writing in part:
Gucci deeply apologizes for the offense caused by the wool balaclava jumper. We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make.
